SMASH goes to Turku in June

30 May 2019

Smash will host its first ever event in Southwestern Finland. The latest trends and innovations in sports and health technology will team up with athletics and the hottest start-ups on Monday, 10 June, the day before the Paavo Nurmi Games.

- We are happy to welcome the SMASH event to Turku. It will open up new opportunities and boost the sports technology and start-up business involved in sports and physical exercise, says Markus Kalmari, City of Turku Sports Services Director.

SMASH Turku will take place at the Visitor and Innovation Centre Joki in collaboration with Paavo Nurmi Games, Turun kaupunki - Åbo stad - City of Turku and the Turku Future Sports project. Kalmari is happy with the collaboration:

- Our project is partnering with the SMASH, bringing it to the magnificent premises of Visitor and Innovation Centre Joki, at the heart of the Turku Science Park adjacent to the Kupittaa Sports Centre. Now, it is time to focus on the future and promote the ecosystem of sports and physical exercise in Turku!

Passion for sports and start-ups combine at the SMASH events. The all new SMASH Turku is organised to provide tools and tips to develop the sports offerings of cities and businesses through sports and health technology. The event, which takes place on the day before the Paavo Nurmi Games, is a step towards a more diversified cooperation network.

- One of the Paavo Nurmi Games and Festival concept’s objectives is to develop and grow in the form of new events in alliance with new partner events. I am confident that our expertise and networks will complement each other perfectly, says Jari Salonen, Managing Director of Paavo Nurmi Games.

The event programme features world-class speakers, for which SMASH is famous, including Lars Stegelmann, pioneer in sports marketing, motivating role models such as Alex Zurita of London Sport, which aims to make London the most active city in the world, alongside start-ups and interesting discussions on sports and health technology.

- The City of Turku has taken an active approach in restructuring its organisation and coming up with new operating models. SMASH is proud to cooperate with the City of Turku and Paavo Nurmi Games. We hope that the businesses in Southwestern Finland will attend the event in great numbers to discover the potential inherent in start-ups. We look forward to seeing them both at the SMASH Turku event and the Paavo Nurmi Games on the next day, says Miikka Neuvonen, CEO of SMASH.
